Crime or Technology

In recent years advancing technology has become a beneficial resource to criminal minds. Identity theft has become a bigger issue while online. The click of a button, the opening of a page, a sweepstakes you won can all lead to a stolen identity. Committing a crime is made easier and more accessible through technology because there is no definite way to secure the internet. The danger of personal information being stolen is a growing threat for every person who uses the internet. Despite the best efforts, the information one transmit from their home computer to online retailers and banking sites is still at risk of being exploited. Technology facilitates crime like hacking and identity theft through providing an open gateway from the person's valuable information to the world-wide web. Electronic identity theft has increased drastically; as hacker become savvier the risk grows. According to Terry Frieden CNN Justice Producer, “criminal organizations have recently begun to engage in "PIN cashing." This is the process of disseminating stolen financial information to criminals who then withdraw money from ATMs all over the world. Frieden states, “In one recent case, PIN cashers made 9,000 withdrawals totaling $5 million in less than 48 hours from four compromised prepaid debit card accounts.” Identity theft like this is allowed to exist on such a massive scale due to advancing technology. This is the main reason I try not to conducted personal business online, especially anything that requires me to give my social, banking info. Although there is security systems like paypal that help protect your information. There is still a risk because you cannot be sure that the system will not be hacked or compromise leaving your information at the will of criminals.
