Agents Spy for Good Reasons

Just two weeks ago I went home and heard that a teenage boy had been stabbed to death. Some people said they had an idea of who it was, but there wasn’t enough evidence to place the suspect at the place where the stabbing occurred. A few days later the suspect had posted something on his facebook wall leading people to believe that he did commit the stabbing. An officer went on the suspect’s friend’s facebook, pretending to be the friend to try and get him to verify what he wrote on his wall. A couple days later, the officer had enough evidence to arrest the suspect.

Nowadays, more and more agents are making up fake profiles to help them catch suspects of certain crimes. So someone who you make think is a “friend” may not be the person you think they are. Some people agree with agents doing this because it helps cut down crime, it helps catch criminals at a higher rate, and it helps protect society from potential criminals. So one may say this all for security purposes, but if agents can do something like this, don’t you think non agents would be capable of doing the same thing for different reasons? Agents are using twitter, facebook, myspace, and other social-networking websites to help them with investigations, but who knows the countless amount of people who are using
these sites for similar purposes, but for all the wrong reasons.

I actually agree with agents being allowed to create these fake profiles because they’re doing it for good reasons. Technology is so advanced that I’m confident we will find the people creating fake profiles for the wrong reasons. The fact that agents do this to increase the level of security and to protect society makes me feel safer and I feel people should appreciate them doing everything they can to do their job.
