So over the past few years the number of people applying for food stamps has increased tremendously. To be exact it has increased by nearly 50% in the past three years (Spinelli). In Ohio alone the number of food stamp applicants rose by 40%. One would think that the increase in applicants would cause an increase in the number of employees working. However, that was not the case. Something called the internet helped solved these issues. Food stamp applications are now easily found online. Instead of having to wake up early and stand in a huge line just to see if you qualify for food stamps, you could just apply online at anytime with no wait. It saves people from a hassle and you wouldn’t waste a whole day just waiting to be helped.
Just recently I had to go to the Welfare building to apply for medical insurance, but before I did that, I made sure I qualified for it online. I had to do a pre-screening application to determine my eligibility so I could then make an appointment. I went with my mom that day and she told me how crowded it used to be because they didn’t organize anything well. There would be people everywhere and in all the wrong places, but now the internet tells you where to go and when to go so you will be at the right place.
So many people are on food stamps nowadays that even stores and supermarkets have needed new technology so that people can use their food stamps in more places. Farmers markets have recently added swipe machines that in return give customers tokens to pat for their groceries and then the farmers turn in the tokens for checks. This helps both the customer and the farmers because customers can eat healthier while farmers get new customers and better business. Technology has bettered the use of food stamps and just being able to attain food stamps in the first place.
