The In's and Out's Of Biometric Technology: A look inside at the future of security

 These technologies are being used for security purposes, employees and other staff remembers of The Drew Creamery will using these technologies in order to enter the corporation buildings, computer network, devices that hold important information, bathrooms, ATM’s, money safe, research labs, and to monitor attendance (Clocking-in/ Clocking out) at work.  Depending on how high you are in the company there are only certain places, and things that employees are allow to enter and get access to.

Biometric Technology is based on what you know, or what you have, and who you are.

To explain the risks and benefits of Biometric technology I will use a corporation/company as an example. Let’s say that the company’s name is Drew Creamery, and they are trying numerous types of biometric securities in order to find out which will be the most secured and fit for the company.

The first type that was used at Drew Creamery, was the signature reader, which works by looking at, and identifying the motions the signature was first recorded.  It records how hard the person pressed while signing.  Each employee of the company needed to enter their signature into the computer before the technology was put into operation.  At first it was hard to use because it sometimes denied legitimate employees because of the little details of each signature. Eventually there was a burglary inside of the building and all the money in the safe was stolen.  This happened because a criminal was able to get a copy of one of the employee’s signature and was able to reproduce it in order to enter the building and then the safe. 

After the signature pad wasn’t successful, the company installed finger print/palm print pads all around the building.  Being that every individual has their own unique fingerprint the company thought this would work well. This meant that all the employees needed to do in order to enter were to press their index finger on the pad, granting the access.  Only the CEO had access to the safe, in order to keep track of the money.  One night the only two employees that were left at the office were the CEO and the janitor. The janitor, named Spencer has been having some financial problems and needed money.  Something snapped in his brain he decided to kill the CEO in order to use his fingerprint to enter the safe and steal the money. The same crime happened when the face recognition was put into place.  In order to break into the safe, and computer records that held important employee information, like social security numbers, home addresses, family information, and corporate credit card numbers the criminal used a face that they knew would be able to grant them access.  Not only did this criminal steal the money that was in the safe but also went so far to steal money from employee’s families using their social security numbers, and credit cards.

The DNA recognition biometric device was installed meaning that employees needed to place their head on the device in order to match their original DNA that was recorded.  This used DNA samples from hair.  It wasn’t successful because it was inconvenient for employees and some of the Drew Creamery employees were or had no hair at all.  These stories seem unrealistic but they are examples to show the pros and cons of the biometric.

Two types of Biometric Technology

Physiological Biometrics is used to identify body shape and physical characteristics of a person.  Examples are fingerprints/ handprint/palm print, face detection, DNA, and odor/scent recognition.  Other ways to identify someone is by their signature, which I feel can be dangerous because signatures can be copied.

Behavior Biometrics is used to identify an individual’s behavior.  Such as the pattern or way someone types, motion behaviors, and identifying a persons voice. 

 In conclusion:  The Benefits and Problems - Biometric Technology

Pros:

-       Everyone has a different voice, fingerprint, handprint, body shape, physical looks, face, body motion, and DNA

-       Finger print scanning can be installed on computers, cell phones, ATM’s, safes, and smaller devices.  From my research fingerprint recognition seems to be the most used and successful.  Fingerprinting has been the most widely used and has the lowest error rate.

-       Can improve and develop employee attendance by using it as a “clock in, clock out” system.  This will replace the widely used paper slips, which will also help the environment.  No other employee can punch in for another.

-       Fast and easy to use if the employees are trained efficiently.

-       Unlike ID cards and passwords, it is very hard to guess, share, and forget.

-       It allows security to use information, like where someone is at a point in time.  It can read where someone last entered.

Cons:

-       Expensive to install

o   On other hand some fingerprint technology can be bought for around $100.

-       No technology is perfect and there are always some problems that can occur.

-       There is a need for Tech. help if anything goes wrong.  So educating the users is another factor that plays into biometric technology and security.

-       Some users may not be comfortable using the technology

-       Schools- to replace library cards, meal plans

-       Walt Disney World Resorts- In order to prevent ticket fraud they use fingerprints to make sure no one enters the park that isn’t supposed to be their or have not paid.

-       Airports- wanted to make passports using facial biometrics in order to make it easier to recognize individuals and show criminal records

-       FBI and other government agencies, like the Department of Homeland Security - everyone that enters the United States must now five a fingerprint in order to keep track of individual’s records.

-       Banks- in order to stop/prevent ATM fraud, credit card fraud, check forgery

-       Hospitals- to keep medicine safe, records safe, and prevent doctors or other employees to steal medication.

-       Police Departments have been using fingerprinting for a very long time.  Now there are finger pads to scan their fingerprints.  This is to replace the ink and paper that used to be used.  It is now easier to send information over the computer to other authorities around the country and worldwide. 

How an iPad could help in Education and Assist Those Who Have Learning Disabilities

My three brothers and I have all been tested and diagnosed with learning disabilities, also known as a learning difference.  We all went to a middle school that only taught children that have been diagnosed with a learning disability.  One of the schools requirements for all students at the school is to make sure everyone had a laptop and they learn effective ways on how it can help you in the future and once you leave the school.  At the Eagle Hill School, in Greenwich Connecticut laptops play a large part in teaching and learning.  It gives the students the chance to learn at an early age how to research things the right way, how to type a paper on a computer, and how to organize.  Being taught how to use a computer is a lesson in itself.  Being a person that has a learning difference it is hard to keep up with the regular population of students that do not have a learning disability, and I now see that the Eagle Hill School was the best choice of schooling that my parents could have picked for my brothers and I.  If it wasn’t for the technology and teachings that I learned from Eagle Hill School I believe that I would not have been able to make it this far in school, and would never have had the techniques to use today.

I believe that a laptop is very similar to a tablet and can accomplish many of the same tasks.  In relating to the reason why technology is used at the Eagle Hill School, I believe that the schools that are willing to use iPad’s as a way to teach and help students learn will be successful and an enormous step in education.

Technology at Eagle Hill

The marriage of directed instruction and technology has proven to be a powerful tool for both students and faculty at Eagle Hill. Technology has been clearly shown to enhance both initial learning of content and retention of content information over time. Computer use in the classroom is meant to supplement, not replace, direct instruction. Teachers are facilitators who utilize new instructional methods and strategies made possible through the use of technology. To be effective, the curriculum must drive the technology program, not vice versa. Students learn the basic skills necessary to use computers independently by participating in project based learning throughout their classes.

Currently at Eagle Hill every classroom teacher is provided with a laptop computer. All campus computers have wireless access throughout the school to the network and all network services.

A laptop program has been in place in the upper school since 1998. Three mobile laptop labs and two traditional computer labs are spread across the campus.

In thinking hard and long about how a tablet or an iPad will be able to become successfully used in an educational atmosphere I have determined that the largest aspect in sing tablets in schools will help students with learning differences or learning disabilities (LD).  One of my accommodations like many others that have LD is the right to use a computer to take notes.  Personally it makes it much easier to organize thoughts and notes on a computer other then using a pencil and paper.  I have also in the past have read books on tape that made me carry around a bulky headset and tape deck and all the tapes that went with the books.  Now that it is easier to buy or rent books on iTunes, there are applications that can read the material to you making it much easier for someone like me to understand, highlight important information, and pronounce important parts of the reading. 

Here are some of the applications that can be helpful to not only students with learning disabilities but other students also. 

Proloquo2Go is a communication application that allows a child to communicate with pictures.  This application can be bought for an iPad or an iPad that lets a student communicate with pictures.  This is a useful application because it allows a student or child to carry a smaller piece of equipment.  It will most importantly help students with fine motor difficulties

Model Me Going Places is another great application, which helps with behavioral problems.  It is an application that shows a slide show of children displaying appropriate behavior.  It will be and has been helpful with children that have autism or behavioral issues in and out of the school environments.

I Write Words is an application that helps children practice writing letters, numbers, and words.  This will help with motor skills, which is a large part of some children that have been diagnosed with a specific learning disability.  It allows a kid to trace a letter on the iPad with their finger, and helps them with writing skills, and helps children that have bad handwriting skills or difficulties writing with a pencil/pen.

Dragon Dictation is an app that allows a person to speak to the iPad and transfer it into an email or send a text message by easily speaking to the iPad.  It can be used with children that have reading or language disabilities, or kids that are not able to write due to a physical disability.  This is considered under the categories of a voice recognition tool or application.  Another reading or text to speech application is Read2me that gives the ability to students to import their own files in to an iPad and it will read the text out loud.  It can be useful for children who are weak readers.

Organization is a large and important tool to learn for someone who has LD.  The application, MyHomework can work with a student to stay organized with assignments or work that they need to do.  I know personally that Eagle Hill emphasized the importance of organization, and even designed a class that everyone in the school need to take that only revolved around teaching us how to stay organized.  This meant that a teacher would assign us with certain assignments such as organizing our calendar and binders.  If they were not organized then we would be given a penalty and be graded on our organization at every level.  This helped to keep track of our progress and I believe that even up to the college level this application can be used effectively homework.

I have had a lot of thoughts and ideas about tablets and iPad's and how cool and fun it would be if it was used in schools.  It would be awesome if a student only needed to buy a tablet such as the iPad where it would have all their textbooks, readings, and everything they needed for class.  A student could take notes in class and even type their papers; there might not even be a need for laptops anymore.  It is much lighter and easier to carry around then book and a regular laptop.  I can think of many applications that a tablet would be great for education, particularly earlier grades.  A tablet with the right software that is designed right there can be great lengths taken into the technology of reading, writing, and math programs.  With a tablet a student could zoom in and out on text, just like reading a book.  By enforcing students to us an iPad it will give students and teachers, instant and personalized access to information, and creating more interest for students and their teachers.  By having both students and teachers using the same exact technology this will give them a chance to have something in common and maybe create a better relationship between student and teacher.  The iPad will also free the users from wires and they will not need to connect to the network because the iPad works wirelessly and on the 3G network.  It lets students and teachers move around much easier and it is much lighter then a laptop.  A large incentive in using the iPad in education is the money that will be saved because there will be no reason to buy textbooks and it will also help the environment because les textbooks will be made.  Finally, the iPad will keep users such as students and teachers up to date with current technology and give them something to talk about other then school work.  It will give them a chance to discuss what new applications are out that may strike interests and may help them with both parties with productivity.  (http://www.ipadinschools.com/).

Seton Hill University (Pennsylvania) – has commited to giving each of its 2100 full time students an iPad.

George Fox University ­– announced  that it would be giving its new students the choice between a Macbook or an iPad.

Oklahoma State University - will be starting  an iPad initiative with 125 students in five different courses during the fall term.

The University of Maryland - is giving iPad’s to 75 incoming Honors students in the fall.

Gibbon Fairfax Winthrop High School - was the very first high school to give an iPad to each of their 320 students

Northwest Kansas Technical College - is going to give an iPad to every student who registers for the Fall 2010 term – and they will be providing their content via iTunes.
