CSCI 70 Fall 2010 Syllabus

1.    Every week write a post on a topic related to technology as it intersects with society. This will require reading multiple sources of technology news and history and coming up with a fresh idea and facts to support it.
2.    Posts will be graded on a scale of 0 to 11 based on the following:
  • 5pts Interesting-ness. This could also be stated as “making the reader say ‘Huh, I never thought of that.’” This can be through expressing an unexpected position, such as that Apple will take over the gaming industry, or stating a commonly held belief, such as that tablet computing will replace desktops, but by doing so in an innovative way. Humor, provocative opinions, and unique ideas all will increase the “interesting-ness”.
  • 5pts Quality of argument. The quality of the argument depends on having a logical set of facts to back up the author’s position. Also, the technical statements of the post need to be correct. For example, I will subtract points for stating that Bill Gates is the owner of Apple computers.
  • 1pt Grammar. There’s no point having an interesting post that’s defeated by its own incomprehensibility.
3.    Each post must be 200 to 700 words. Shorter or longer posts will get no points.
4.    At the end of the semester, additional points will be awarded based on page views. On the web, generating hits by writing something provocative and interesting is the ultimate measure of success. The students can use whatever means they want to try and increase their unique page views: Facebook, twitter, email, encouraging linking, etc. The student with the most cumulative page views for their posts will receive 20pts. The next down, 19pts, and so on.
5.    Suggested topics for posts:
  • opinion about new technology product
  • review or commentary on a book or news item
  • impact or use of  technology in your personal life
  • historical perspective on technological change
  • differences between technology use and availability to your parents, grandparents and you
  • dangers of technology
  • new technology innovations
6.    Classes periods will be used for:
  • discussing topics for blogging
  • discussion of successes and failures for getting page views
  • review and discussion of blog posts
7.    Several classes will be held via web conferencing. More details to follow on this.

  1. Apple has been the largest technology company during our lifetime and now that the IPhone 4 is out it is changing the way people communicate, interact, and meet. The largest and most useful component of that the IPhone 4 has is Facetime. It is a video chat device that lets people see each other instantly as they talk to them. Instead of just talking to someone on the phone trying to imagine what face they are making or what they look like, Facetime lets the user do this. This makes it easy for deaf people to even own a phone now letting them see the person or even use sign language. These days there are a lot of people that go away and leave home for work. This makes it hard to see their families and stay in touch. Now the IPhone 4 lets the user see their families and friends where every they go right in the palm of their hands. It is a very comfortable feeling knowing that you keep sees your loved ones anytime you feel like it. The camera on the IPhone 4 also gives the user the option to change camera angles so the person on the other line can look at exactly what the person they are talking to is seeing. For example is someone traveled to the Grand Canyon and wanted to show a friend all the way back in Connecticut they could do this because of the IPhone 4. It is unbelievable on what Apple has done in the past few years and I am sure there is more great stuff to come.
